The Playing Field

Competition, a big part of anyone’s lives, is it good or bad? I most definitely believe that competition is good because it gives things for people to strive for.  The playing field is what I refer to as life, to even the playing field either you have to get better or the other player has to get worse, and that isn’t very likely. In the marching band sense, it shows members that there are people better than them so that they do not get uppity.  One of Litchfield Marching Bands main rivals is the 728 Cadets, we beat them in 2016 with Pirates and we’ve been striving to beat them again ever since.  Now, we are great friends with everyone in that band and it is a friendly competition, there are cases where competition is not so friendly.  Take, for example, a band deserving first and receives first, now there was another band in that situation, a band that thought they deserved first.  This band decided that the only way to resolve this situation is to complain and trash the other bands’ bus and uniform trailer.  Now I’m guessing you can see that this band had some issues with dealing with competition if one has to stoop as low as messing with another band then they are going at it all wrong.  Let me paint a picture of bad competition.

It’s fathers day, the day of the Hutchinson parade. There are multiple bands performing; Litchfield, Hutch, and DC.  Now, you’ve just finished the parade and you did really good! You were the second band through so now you have to go and watch the other performances before the awards ceremony. You watch as another band comes through and they don’t do so hot.  Once every band is through you all head down to the baseball field to receive the awards. Fast forward a ways to the announcements of the trophies, after announcing third as Hutch and DC as second, they finally announce Litchfield as first. Everybody is cheering and happy. Until someone from the other band speaks up, ” This isn’t fair!” They scream. “They cheated!” As you can imagine, everyone is yelling and arguing and it isn’t getting better.

Everyone can imagine a good source of competition so I don’t think I’ll need to describe that, but this was a bad source of competition.
